One option for making an existing fence, such as a chain link fence, more private is to use a privacy fence screen. Basically, privacy fence screening is a sheet of fabric that can be stretched across a fence. These materials come in a variety of different colors and visual blocking capabilities.

Choosing a Privacy Fence Screen

Since privacy fence screens are fully customizable, you can get one for any existing fence. You'll need to do some measurements, or have a contractor take the measurements for you. Your selection really comes down to the amount of visibility and wind blockage you want, and the specific color that you would like.

You'll find most privacy fence screens will come in visibility and wind blockage capabilities from 80% up to 100%. In other words, a screen with 90% blockage will block 90% of what people can see when they look through it. In general, the greater the blockage, the higher the cost.

Privacy fence screens are also availaable in a wide variety of colors. In fact, you can easily find companies that will allow you to select your own custom colors and even have pictures, such as a company logo or advertisement, printed on the screen. This makes privacy fence screening a great choice for commercial applications.

Privacy Fence Screen Material

Privacy fence screening comes in a variety of materials, but most commonly polypropylene and PVC vinyl. These materials are very durable, but can fade after several years of exposure to the sun, so be sure to get a fence screen that has been treated with UV protection.

Attachment to fences is usually through grommets in the privacy fence screen. Make sure to look for metal grommets for the best durability. Plastic grommets will weaken and break over time.

Cost of Privacy Fence Screens

Prices for privacy fence screening can vary considerably depending on the fence height, the material used, the amount of blockage desired and colors selected. Expect to pay anywhere from $1.50 to $5.00 per linear foot. Custom colors and printing will add additional costs.

A privacy fence screen is the least costly way to make a chain link fence private, or to enhance the privacy of any other existing fence. Choose the right privacy fence screening for your application and desired aesthetics.

Weave – Slats are inserted diagonally through the fence, creating a woven-look. These are easy to install for the do-it-youselfer, or you can buy chain link fences with the weave already installed. Slats are typically available in vinyl and aluminum.

Vertical – Like weave slats, vertical slats are narrower and install vertically in the fence. These don't close up the fence quite as much as the weave, but still provide a decent level of privacy. These are typically found in vinyl and come in a wide variety of colors.

Hedge – If you are trying to blend a chain link fence into the landscape, a hedge insert gives your fence the look of a well-groomed hedgerow. Include some simple planting beds in front of your fence for a wonderful, natural look.

Another way to make a chain link fence private is to add a privacy fence screen. These are available in a variety of colors and degrees of visual blocking. They are simple to install and fairly inexpensive compared to other options.

Some privacy panels are made from metal, which integrates wonderfully with existing ornamental fences and provide a consistent, elegant look. Others are made from durable vinyl, are easier to install than metal, but will still provide long-lasting comfort and enjoyment. Some ornamental panels can even be swiveled, like a louver, so that you can open up the panels when you want to enjoy the sights outside your yard, but close them back up when you want privacy.
